How We're Giving Back to Support Biodiversity and Endangered Species
Our Planet Soap was founded in late 2018 on the following principals:
- producing the best possible natural & sustainable palm oil-free personal care products
- educating our customers on the critical importance of biodiversity and the immediate threat to gravely endangered species
- generating profits to donate to endangered species conservation efforts.
We are committed to donating 10% of the profits from our Endangered Species Soap bars at the end of every year, but you might be asking yourselves, how and where will we do that?
There are a lot of people and organizations out there working very hard to make a difference, trying to save threatened species, as well as educating us about how we all can help. It can be hard to choose where to lend our assistance, but we've identified a couple of terrific groups already.
The lifelong work of Dr. Birute Galdikas with orangutans in Borneo was our original inspiration to produce palm oil-free products, and naming our exfoliating tangerine soap bar after orangutans. At the end of the year, we will donate 10% of our profits from our Orangutan Soap to her organization, Orangutan International Foundation. We encourage all our customers to go to https://orangutan.org, and get involved or donate on your own. Understanding how palm oil has driven orangutans to near extinction is critical, and her biography, Reflections of Eden: My Years with the Orangutans of Borneo, is a fascinating read.
Butterflies & Bees
The Xerces Society, an amazing source of information and action, is dedicated to Invertebrate Conservation. They "collaborate with scientists, land managers, and conservationists to raise awareness about the plight of invertebrates and to gain protection for the most vulnerable species before they decline to a level at which recovery is impossible. Destruction of habitat, introduced species, and pesticides are all leading to the loss of invertebrate species." We'll be donating 10% of our profits from our Butterfly and our Honey Bee soap bars to the Xerxes society. Check out their amazing website: https://xerces.org/
So those are the two organizations we have identified so far. We'll be sharing more amazing organizations with you throughout the year, and hope that you will choose on your own to get involved with biodiversity and endangered species organizations that appeal to you. Or maybe it's a local effort to cut down on single use plastic. Or recycling your cell phone battery to help gorillas. Or choosing a product that does not use palm oil. It's all a small drop in the bucket, but it can add up to real change.
Our Endangered Species Soap bars are available in some zoo gift stores now, so know that when you purchase them there, you are also contributing to animals conservation efforts by zoos as well. A win win for everyone!
